there waiting to be paid out to people who may not realize they have it coming. nbc's john yang has more on why and how you can tell if you're among them. >> reporter: andy and chris fox got a letter about a year ago that shocked them. >> it was five years after my father had passed. we had no knowledge of any insurance policies whatsoever. >> reporter: the letter was from an insurance company. they would learn that chris' father had three separate life insurance policies worth nearly $50,000 and never told his family. to recover their money, the foxes embarked on what would become a journey. there were weeks of phone calls with insurance companies and state insurance officials. >> i worked for uncle sam, the united states navy, as a civilian for 38 years. i know what it is to deal with a bureaucracy. >> reporter: in the end they collected $48,000. it took them eight months. the foxes' experience is not unique. according to a recent study there's a one in 600 chance you're owed money from a life insurance policy and don't even know it. that's better odds than winning $100 on a powerball ticket.

? >>> overseas secretary of state john kerry delivered a blunt message to the government of iraq today. it was all about what's happening with syria and iran. nbc's chief foreign affairs correspondent andrea mitchell is with the secretary in baghdad. >> reporter: john kerry is the first secretary of state to come to iraq since hillary clinton in 2009. it's his first visit since he came as a senator at the height of the civil war in 2006. arriving today in secrecy, in the week when iraq saw some of its worst terrorist attacks in years to mark the tenth anniversary of the war. but kerry did not come primarily to discuss iraq. despite the smiles for the cameras, the secretary of state confronted iraq's prime minister maliki, accusing him of colluding with iran to prop up the assad regime by permitting almost daily weapons shipments from iran to syria through iraq's airspace. >> we had a very spirited discussion on the subject of the overflights. i made it very clear to the prime minister that the overflights from iran are in fact helping to sustain president assad. and his regime. >> repo
: while security was beefed up at colorado governor john hickenlooper's mansion as a precaution, authorities say they have no suspect or motive. >> we are sensitive to the fact there could be any number of people who may have a motive for wanting to target him for a crime such as this. however, we also remain open minded to all of the other possibilities as well. >> reporter: since 2011 clements oversaw colorado's 20 prisons, home to more than 20,000 inmates. for 31 years before that he worked in missouri's prison system. tuesday night, clements was shot at his front door. >> somebody rang the doorbell. the husband answered and was shot. >> reporter: neighbors told police say saw a car running outside just minutes before the murder. >> because we don't have a suspect, we don't know the whereabouts of the suspect we want folks to remain vigilant. >> reporter: it's the latest shooting in a state that saw the aurora movie theater massacre and columbine. it's become ground zero for the gun debate. ironically the government kept his schedule today, signing tough new gun legislation l
